Like most regiments, the 28th Wisconsin was divided into ten companies, each given a letter designation of A through K (the letter "J" was not used). During post-war regimental reunions, "Company Q" was the name coined for the group of friends or relatives who were accepted as honorary members of the regimental society.

". . . I am chairman of a committee appointed two years ago to consider the matter of perpetuation of this organization (the Society of the 28th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry) through the sons of the first generation. The committee has met informally, never had a regular committee meeting; but we deem it impossible to do anything except by way of increasing Company Q. I think every last one of us is united in the thought of keeping up this organization as long as there is a single member of the old 28th left. We are afraid when the last member passes away the organization will go. The younger generation cannot have the same spirit because we were not, like you, for four years at the front . . . I do not see how this organization can be perpetuated. The 28th is too good to live after it is dead".

Rev. Weiss spoke these words at the Twentieth Annual Reunion of the 28th Wisconsin, held at Elkhorn, Wisconsin on 26 June 1902. He expressed doubt that the 28th Wisconsin organization (as a reunion society) could exist once the last member passed on, except by way of Company Q. His suggestion that the 28th Wisconsin was "too good to live once it was dead" may have been short-sighted. It is precisely the reason that we, the descendants of the volunteers of the 28th Wisconsin, should not allow our ancestors' dedication, patriotism and sacrifice to be forgotten. At this Web site, we can commemorate their place in the history of this country and in the history of our families.

Therefore, welcome to the new Company Q.

Though more than seven decades have passed since the last reunion was held, I would like to re-activate and carry on the spirit and tradition of Company Q. The persons listed on this page have identified themselves as descendants of the original members of the 28th Wisconsin, and/or have contributed historical materials and research to this web site. My sincerest thanks to all of you who have willingly contributed information about the 28th Wisconsin to share with others.
